Day Skipper

7 Days: €800.00

RYA Day Skipper Sailing practical course is for aspiring skippers who have some yachting experience and basic navigation and sailing ability.

Suggested Previous Experience

You should already know how to sail and have:

  • Your knowledge of coastal navigation and meteorology should be to the standard of Day Skipper shore based course.
  • You should be able to sail around a triangular course and control boat speed and if gybing is still a surprise, then you need more practice.
  • 5 days aboard a yacht
  • 100 nautical miles logged
  • 4 night hours

Course Details

You will be coached over the full RYA Day Skipper syllabus as you live aboard one of the school owned yachts and all your meals will be provided for the duration of the course. Each trainee skipper will be asked to skipper the yacht on a short passage. The instructor will be on hand to give advice and encouragement, ensuring that your destination is reached safely.

The essential element is that you experience being in charge, taking the credit when all goes well and also being responsible when it does not. The end of each day is usually spent around the chart discussing the passages and gaining from each other's experience. At the end of the course you should achieve a level of seamanship and boat handling up to the standard required to skipper a small cruising yacht safely by day in tidal waters with which the student is familiar.

Competent Crew

5 Days: €800.00

The RYA Competent Crew course is a 5 day course for beginners or those wishing to build on the skill they learnt during the RYA ‘Start Yachting’ course. It is aimed at people who would like to become active crew members rather than just passengers. Most courses start in the evening to give the new crew a chance to settle in and find their way around the boat before setting sail the next day. The instructor will give a full safety briefing before the first passage but virtually the whole course is hands on. You are the crew and without you the sails will not go up and the boat will not be steered!

One pleasure of this course is the way that total strangers start working together to get the yacht sailing along nicely. By the end of the course you should be able to steer, handle sails, keep a lookout, row a dinghy and assist in daily routines on board. You should also have visited some interesting places and had an enjoyable time away. This course will provide you with a good foundation for many years of happy and confident cruising.

Suggested Previous Experience

None! You will be coached over the RYA course syllabus as you live aboard one of the school's yachts. All meals onboard are provided for the duration of the course. Expect to eat out three times throughout the week.
